tonight reminded me of a fourth item.

4.  Dancing

i don't mean dancing in a professional sense, although i took ballet lessons last year and loved it.  i'm talking about free spirited, spontaneous, get out on the dance floor and go tribal in beat with the music kinda dancing.  exhilarating, intoxicating, mind-altering and cathartic.  i like to dance out my demons until i've reached a zen-like state.

I'm going to take a break from my list of Things That Make Me Irrationally Happy to write about something else that is no less dear to my heart: the movies of director Wong Kar Wai.

3. The Olsen Twins

Bet you didn't see this one coming! Here's the thing, I don't give a shit about the lives of the Olsen twins, their going-ons or affairs of the heart. I still get confused when trying to figure out which one's the 'crazy' one and which one's the 'low-key' one. What I love is their incredibly weird fashion. They dressed like hobos before it ever became chic and WOAH... this just came to me, they're like Little Edie from Grey Gardens. You gotta respect people who put a lot of thought into what looks like a pile clothes that was thrown on haphazardly. I do. I even got a haircut inspired by Ashley's bob. True story.

I'm not alone... )

2. Puppies!*

Yes, I know. Generic but true. Let me add a little back story to make it personal. We didn't have pets growing up as kids and, for some reason, we were all terrified of dogs. I remember my sister got chased by a dog once and we were convinced she was a gonner. She's running around us in circles, crying in fear and we're yelling at the owner to control her dog and she's yelling at Sarah to stop running - but who's going to do that when there is a vicious animal chasing you who will EAT YOU as soon as you stop?!! Stupid woman. And my best friend had this cat that I thought was the prettiest looking thing. Cats are calm and soft, unlike dogs who are just looking for an excuse to bite you!

Then something changed. We became the owner of a dog; I developed a terrible allergic reaction to cats and then proceeded to date people with multiple cats. Suddenly I find myself growing irrationally angry anytime I think about cats, and how they smell, and what assholes they are, and how they make my face swell up with phlegm, mucus and all sorts of nasty liquids. Anyways, that's all countered by my love of puppies, even small puppies (as long as they're not too noisy. Problem with really big puppies is that they can knock me over in their enthusiasm, literally). I mean, what's there not to love about a dog? They're always excited to see you and everything is an adventure for the first time, even if it's the same trail you've walked every day for the past ten years. The really cool ones can even do tricks and play dressup!

*All doggies are puppies, regardless of size and age.

puppies i love... )

not infrequently have i been accused of being a pessimist, a negative nancy, and so on. (my friends really love me!) but they have a point (those assholes) bc the strangest things have the power to evoke irrational anger in me. take for example indiana's first really cold, windy, and generally blustery day. the wind made me so irritable and grumpy that i seriously considered writing my congressman about what we can do to make such wind illegal. i kid you not. anyways, the list is long and, strangely enough, filled with many natural elements. so in a mind-over-matter attempt to turn my chronic pessimism into...well, not optimism, how about occasional optimism, i want to dedicate the next few posts to things that make me irrationally happy.

Things That Make Me Irrationally Happy

1. Seth Rogen

He's not even my type! But something about this chubby funnyman gives me the giggles anytime I start talking about him, as in little girl-schoolyard-blushing-giggles. One of my projects for the future is to amass a collection of Seth Rogen movie DVDs.

1b. Napoleon Dynamite
Speaking of funnymen, I think I need to add Napoleon Dynamite to this list bc I LUV that boy! I can watch that movie over and over again, even though I hate reruns.

I'm cracking up just looking at this picture! hm...there seems to be a trend here: goofy white guys with curly hair.

So I think I should add another name to this list:

1c. Ben Black

What can I say, he's funnier than your mom.
